"Everything You Need to Know About Pool Care"

ACIDITY -- pH value below 7. FILTRATION -- Removal of particles from pool water by pumping water through filter.
ALGAE -- An aquatic plant common to all water. If allowed to grow uncontrolled, it turns the water green or brown and causes pool walls and floors to feel slimy. HARD WATER -- Water with high calcium or magnesium content, plus high alkalinity.
ALGAECIDE -- A chemical agent that prevents algae. IRON -- Causes green, brown, or black discoloration of pool water.
ALKALINE -- Water with sufficient alkaline substances to have a pH reading above 7. ISOCYANURATES -- A chlorine bearing compound used in disinfecting pool water, characterized by complete solubility and continuous chlorine residuals. The basic ingredient in J.C products.
ALKALINITY -- The total amount of alkaline substances in water. This should not be confused with pH. MAGANESE -- Like iron, causes discoloration.
ALUM -- A substance used to settle suspended impurities to pool bottom. MICRON -- One millionth of a meter, used in describing particle sizes that filters are capable of removing from water.
AVAILABLE CHLORINE -- Denotes the chlorine residual present in the pool in p.p.m. (parts per million) NEUTRAL -- pH of 7.0
BACK WASH -- Reversing the flow through the filter to clean our the accumulated dirt. The back wash water should be discarded. ORTHOTOLIDINE -- Solution used in test kit to indicate chlorine residual.
BACTERIA -- One-celled microscopic organisms. Bacteria can cause infection and must be killed by the available chlorine. PARTS PER MILLION -- A measurement showing the weight of an ingredient in its relation to the water it is in. One pound of material to 120,000 gallons of water equals 1 p.p.m.
CHLORINE -- The most widely used sanitizer for pools. pH -- A measure of acidity and alkalinity. Neutral water having a value of 7.0. Under 7.0 is an acid solution. Over 7.0 is an alkaline solution.
CHLORINE DEMAND -- The amount of chlorine necessary to properly control a pool. The chlorine demand varies depending on bathing load, water temperature, pH, pool exposure, etc. PHENOL RED -- Solution used in test kit to indicate pH.
CHLORINE RESIDUAL -- Measured by test kit, it is the amount of chlorine present in the pool water. QUATERNARY AMMONIUM COMPOUND -- A chemical widely used in compounding algaecides.
COAGULATION -- Precipitation or flocculation as a result of using alum. REAGENT -- Specially prepared fluids for testing purposes.
DIATOMACEOUS EARTH -- A fine powder composed of skeletons of minute marine animals. It is used as a filter media. SHOCK -- An extra heavy dosage of a chemical to cure a particular problem.
DOSAGE -- The amount of chemical added to a pool to do a specific job. SLIME -- Refers to condition caused by algae.
FILTER POWDER -- Diatomaceous Earth. SUPER CHLORINATION -- An occasional heavy dose of chlorine to kill algae and bacteria that have developed tolerances to existing chemical conditions in pool.
